A very old khanjar from Syria during the Ottoman period. This example is very early for the type, dating to the late 19th century. The thick, curved, double- edged steel blade has a strong medial ridge that spans to the acute point, having very good steel used on this example. The hilt is composed of horn in an "I- shape. Two brass plaques are fastened by brass nails, both with untranslated Arabic script and incised scrolls. Brass pommel plate engraved with a series of circle-dot designs.
The sheath has a wooden interior covered in brass sheet, embossed in traditional Levant patterns stippled on the front. A very early example from Ottoman Syria.
