A very good khanjar from around the second quarter of the 20th century originating from Syria, showing influences of the region within the hilt shape and design details.
The curved, double- edged steel blade has two pairs of double central fullers transitioning to a medial ridge extending to an acute point. Silver overlay is present on each side with panels of swirling floral vinework. The hilt is composed of bovine horn with a slightly flared pommel. The bovine hilt hilt carved with double linear grooves the entirety of its length.
The sheath with a wooden interior covered ornately with a greenish-turquois silk with bronze hued floral patterns. Iron mounts completely decorated in traditional silver niello designs. Attached are two iron suspension rings.
A very good Syrian khanjar with an Iraqi influenced form. A good decorated niello blade, complete with an attractive sheath and mounts with excellent color contrast.
